Bear Cubs Defeat Shasta 14-2

On Friday, the Bear Cubs (1-2) hosted the Shasta College Knights (0-4) at Cook Sypher Field. While Santa Rosa has been off to a slow start to keep off the 2024 season, both losses have come by one run each. Jordan Giacomini, who came into the game 1-0 with a 2.25 ERA, got the start on the mound for the Bear Cubs. In the top of the first inning, Giacomini made quick work of the Shasta's offense by retiring the side in order. In the bottom half, the first two Bear Cub batters reached on walks before Alex Leopard drove home Gabe Henschel. Following a passed ball that scored Aidan Lombardi, Dalen Tinsley crushed an RBI double. After 1, the Bear Cubs led 3-0. The Knights answered back with two runs in the top of the second. Santa Rosa responded with five runs, highlighted by a three-run home run from Tinsley over the left-field fence. Hekili Robello took over on the mound in the third inning and held the Knights scoreless for three innings, surrendering just one hit and striking out two in that span. The score would remain 8-2 in favor of Santa Rosa until the bottom of the fifth when Henschel drove in two runs to extend the lead to 10-2. Luke Dillion entered on the mound in the sixth and pitched two scoreless innings, striking out four Shasta batters. The Bear Cub offense continued its dominance in the bottom half of the sixth inning with four runs, highlighted by a solo home run from Josh Martin and another two-run single by Henschel. In the eighth inning, Luke Schat made his first appearance of the season by throwing a three-up three-down frame where he stuck out two batters. Lombardi would move from shortstop to the pitcher's mound in the ninth inning and finish the game. The Bear Cubs won 14-2 and moved to .500 on the season at 2-2. Hekili Robello got his first win on the season, and Gabe Henschel, Dalen Tinsley, and Josh Martin were the standout offensive players. Henschel went 4-5 with 4 RBI, Tinsley went 2-3 with 4 RBI including a HR, and Martin went 2-4 with 2 RBI and a HR. The Bear Cubs (2-2) next travel to the College of Marin on Tuesday to face the Mariners (4-2).
