Bear Cubs Sweep Cabrillo

Bear Cubs Sweep Cabrillo

On Thursday, the Bear Cubs (7-3) hosted the Cabrillo College Seahawks (4-7) in the first of a two-game series. Kahiau Schenk, the University of Hawaii transfer, started on the mound for Santa Rosa. Schenk had command trouble, giving up three walks, and had to be relieved by Hekili Robello with two outs in the first inning. Robello limited the Seahawks to just one run in the first inning. After Cabrillo's run in the opening frame, both offenses went cold until the fifth inning. During that span, the Bear Cubs only compiled two hits, and Cabrillo had zero hits. In the bottom of the fifth, Santa Rosa got on the scoreboard with a solo home run from Zane Bennett, tying the game at 1-1. Robello continued his dominance on the mound by striking out two batters in a scoreless sixth inning. In the bottom half of the inning, Alex Leopard hit his fourth home run of the season, a go-ahead two-run home run, giving Santa Rosa a 3-1 lead. After another scoreless frame, Leopard gave Santa Rosa an insurance run with an RBI single in the seventh inning. Robello, who had yet to give up a hit in relief, threw a three-up, three-down eighth inning. After a scoreless bottom half, Robello went back to the mound to finish the game and potentially throw a combined no-hitter. After a strikeout, Cabrillo got their first hit, ending the no-hit bid. With two outs, the Seahawks pushed a run across on a double. The batter who hit a double tried to reach third after the cutoff throw went to second base but was thrown out by Josh Martin, ending the game. The Bear Cubs won the pitcher's duel 4-2.

On Friday, Tony Suarez got the start on the mound for the Bear Cubs in game two of the series.  Suarez struck out two batters in a scoreless opening frame. Santa Rosa got their first run of the game via an RBI single by Josh Martin in the bottom half of the first inning. Cabrillo immediately answered back with a run in the top of the second, evening the score at 1-1. After the Bear Cubs failed to score, Brice Cox relieved Suarez in the top of the third. The game remained tied at 1-1 until Tyler Nordyke's two-run double in the fourth inning gave Santa Rosa a 3-1 lead. Cox kept the Seahawks off the scoreboard until they pushed one run across in the sixth inning, cutting the deficit to two runs. The Bear Cubs responded with a solo home run by Keenan Morris and a three-run home run by Jake McCoy, making the score 7-2 in favor of Santa Rosa. Cox threw two more scoreless innings before Christian Schiavo and McCoy finished the game off in the ninth inning. With the 7-2 victory, Santa Rosa secured a sweep over Cabrillo in the two-game series.

The Bear Cubs open Big 8 play next week with a series vs Folsom Lake, starting with a 2 pm home game on Tuesday.
