Men's Basketball: Bear Cubs lose a close game to the Mariners

Thursday night hosted a tip-off between the Santa Rosa JC Bear Cubs and the College of Marin Mariners. In the first half, it was all Bear Cubs as they quickly jumped to an 11-4 lead and built from there, with contributions from everyone on the court. After missing the first six games this season, second-year player, Corey Hammell, returned this evening putting up 18 points, complimented by 17 rebounds. This only added further momentum to the Bear Cubs strong first half, which closed with the two teams trading buckets back and forth. Going into halftime the Bear Cubs lead 29-23.

From the start of the second half, the Mariners came storming back, rallied by a rowdy home crowd. By the ten minute mark in the second half, the Mariners had their first lead of the night, 46-45. Sophomore guard Davone Oliver quickly silenced the crowd and stopped the momentum with a quick three pointer, and then a steal leading to an open bucket in transition to give the Bear Cubs a 50-46 lead. Returning from a preseason injury, Parker Farris provided a few key minutes in the second half, including a three pointer to break up an even score with 7:32 left in the ball game. But backed by a strong home crowd and some great second half shooting, the Mariners rose to the challenge with a game winning shot with only 7 seconds left to go in the game, giving the Mariners a 64-62 win over the visiting Bear Cubs.
