Track & Field: Bear Cubs Travel to Three Different Meets in Search of State Qualifying Marks

The Bear Cubs traveled to three different meets across the bay area this week in search of qualifying marks. Most of the squad competed at Chabot College and San Francisco State University, while a select few got the opportunity to compete along side some of the top track and field programs in the NCAA Division I. At Stanford, Christian Corbin and Brandon Randel competed in the 100m and the mens 4x100m relay comprised of Randel, Corbin, Kyle Vannetti, and Dontae Garcia all competed well against some tough competition. While the times were not the best, they gained some great experience battling some of the fastest sprinters in the country. At San Francisco State, Erica Ruiz and Luz Sanchez continued their streak of PR-ing in every race, clocking a blistering 18:59.22 and 19:04.19 in the 5000m. These times rank them 2nd and 3rd respectively in the Big 8 Conference. Cristian Nazerak also competed in the 5000m at SF State. Missing the State "A" standard by one second, Nazerak finished with a time of 15:15.95.

Across the bay, sophomore Daisey Villegas had a great meet at Chabot College. In the Hammer, Villegas threw a SRJC 5th all-time mark of 42.74m (140'2"), placing her 3rd in the Big 8 Conference this year. Allyson Bricker also finished 3rd in the High Jump, hitting 1.40m. Thrower Nick DeSoto walked away with a pair of first place finishes in the Shot Put and Discus. Qualifying for the state meet last year, DeSoto just missed the State "A" standard in the discus (46.01) with a throw of 45.90m. The distance squad had a great showing in the Steeplechase with Nathan Bailey, Daniel Mondragon and Gideon Halpin placing 2nd, 3rd, and 4th.

The Bear Cubs will travel to Merrit College to compete int he Maurice Compton Invitational next Friday before they host the 3rd Annual SR Twilight High School Meet at Bailey Field on Saturday the 11th.
