Bear Cubs Split Doubleheader Vs Mendocino

On Thursday, the Bear Cubs (6-2) hosted the Mendocino College Eagles (3-5) in a doubleheader matchup.

In game one, Jordan Baughn got the start on the mound for the Bear Cubs. The Eagles scored one run in the opening frame, but the Bear Cubs immediately responded with two runs via an RBI groundout by Adriana Novak and a sacrifice fly by Esperanza Marquez, putting Santa Rosa in front 2-1 after the first inning. After a shutdown inning by Baughn, the Bear Cubs put up five runs in the bottom half. The five runs came via a two-run double by Adriana Novak, an RBI single by Gabriela Schenone, and a two-run single by Hailey Martin. In the third inning, the Bear Cubs would add one more run off an error after another scoreless frame by Baughn. Both teams failed to score in the fourth. After four the Bear Cubs had a 8-1 lead. The top of the fifth was another impressive frame by Baughn and the Bear Cub defense. In the bottom half, Novak worked a walk and Haley Wyatt crushed a two-run home run over the left field fence. The home run gave the Bear Cubs a 10-1 run-rule victory in game one of the doubleheader. 

 

In the second game of the doubleheader, Jessica Hernandez was the starting pitcher for the Bear Cubs. Like the first game of the doubleheader, the Eagles scored in the first inning. After the opening frame, both teams were held scoreless until Esperanza Marquez tied the game at 1-1 in the fourth inning with an RBI single. After a three-up, three-down inning by Hernandez, the Bear Cubs took the lead on an RBI single by Haley Wyatt. After five, Santa Rosa lead 2-1. Mendocino tied the game in the sixth off of an error at 2-2. In the bottom of the sixth, the Bear Cubs had the bases loaded with one out but could not score. In the seventh, Hernandez retired the side in order, giving the Bear Cubs the opportunity to walk it off in the bottom of the inning. Santa Rosa went scoreless in the seventh, and the game went into extra innings. Mendocino scored one run in the top of the eighth inning, and the Bear Cubs could not score in the bottom half. Mendocino won 3-2 in eight innings. The Bear Cubs split the doubleheader.

After a (7-3) start to the season, Santa Rosa will now enter conference play, starting Saturday with a home doubleheader vs. San Joaquin Delta College.
