NorCal Playoffs Round III Game Report

In their third round NorCal Playoff game, the Bear Cubs (20-10), ranked #3 in the North, played host to a familiar Big 8 foe, the #11 ranked Diablo Valley College Vikings (20-10). The Vikings won the tipoff and scored fifteen seconds into the game. Madison Sowards sank two free throws to tie the game fifty seconds later. The Vikings jumped out to a 10-4 lead at the 16:56 mark. Coach Campbell called a timeout, and the Bear Cubs responded by scoring 9 unanswered points during the next three minutes to go on top 13-10. Madison Sowards' 3-pointer with 10:48 on the clock gave her team an 18-15 lead. Both teams played tough defense and the Vikings moved ahead 26-25 with 49 seconds remaining. The Bear Cubs pushed the ball and Alicia Mehtlan scored two field goals to give her team a 29-26 lead going into halftime. Madison Sowards started the scoring in the second half with a 3-pointer, and she sank another one two possessions later to put the Bear Cubs up 36-28. After Erin Skinner sank two free throws at the 15:09 mark their lead was up to 46-37. The Vikings hit four free throws to help cut their deficit to 45-50 at the 12:35 mark. Free throws by Erin Skinner and Gretchen Harrigan enabled the Bear Cubs to keep pace with the Vikings, and then Harrigan sank three tough shots to extend their lead to 64-55 with 5:45 left on the clock. Two free throws by Stephanie Sack and five by Harrigan and field goals by Erin Skinner and Harrigan completed the scoring for the Bear Cubs as they went on to win 75-64. The Vikings are a quick team that pushed the ball up court every time, resulting in scoring drives or trips to the free throw line. They ended up making 17 out of 26 free throws (65%) while the Bear Cubs made 19 out of 27 (70%). But the Bear Cub guards held the Vikings' leading scorer to 12 points instead of her 20+ average. Gretchen Harrigan posted her thirteenth double-double with 31 points and 10 rebounds. Madison Sowards finished with three 3-pointers on her way to 17 points. Stephanie Sack nearly had a triple-double with 12 points, 10 rebounds, and 8 assists. Erin Skinner contributed 8 points and 9 rebounds, while Alicia Mehtlan scored 7 points and grabbed 13 rebounds. The Bear Cubs travel to #2 seeded Fresno City College for a Saturday game with the winner advancing to the State Tournament at Cerritos College in Southern California.
