Women's Basketball: Delta too much for the Bear Cubs on the road

             The Bear Cubs (6-12, 1-3) were on the road again Tuesday, this time to Stockton to face the Mustangs (15-5, 2-2) of San Joaquin Delta College. Both teams got off to a slow start, as La Donna Saint Louis scored the first points of the game on an 8-footer from the baseline with 7:31 on the clock. The Mustangs sank the tying field goal over a minute later and took a 5-2 lead on a 3-pointer with 4:05 left. Tiffany Salinas' field goal and Hayley Louzao two free throws briefly put the Bear Cubs in front, 6-5. A Mustang putback put them back in front with 2:24 remaining. Meme Nicolis hit a short shot with 1:20 to go, then the Mustangs banked in another putback and a field goal with 32 seconds left. Madison Barsuglia drew a foul with four seconds left and made both free throws to get within a point, 10-11, as the quarter ended.

            Sadie Irvine got the scoring going in the second quarter on the Bear Cubs' first shot attempt, but the Mustangs answered with a 3-pointer. Tiffany Salinas sank a short shot, Irvine a single free throw, and Ashley Hart completed a 3-point play at the 8:09 mark to tie the score at 18. The Mustangs added a field goal and a free throw in the next minute and Tiffany Salinas another field goal with 6:29 left, making the score 20-21. The Mustangs hit a 3-pointer with 4:12 on the clock to start a 15-5 run during the remainder of the period and go into halftime with a 36-25 lead.

            The Mustangs started the third quarter with a 13-0 run as the Bear Cubs committed five turnovers and missed their first 10 shots. Destiny Grayer finally stopped their scoreless streak at the midway point of the period with a 3-pointer to make the score 28-49. Ashley Hart banked in a 2-footer on their next possession, and Jenny Eggers scored on a putback the following time down to get the deficit to 32-51 with 2:34 left. The Mustangs finished the quarter with a 3-pointer and a field goal, while the Bear Cubs only made three free throws to end the period in a 35-56 hole.

            The Mustangs scored first in the fourth quarter on two free throws, and Sadie Irvine matched them with two of her own. The Mustangs then hit their first of six 3-pointers in the period. Tiffany Salinas scored on a drive with 8:27 on the clock to make the score 39-61. The Mustangs added two field goals and a 3-pointer before Meme Nicolis scored with 3:46 left, followed by Destiny Grayer's scoring drive. The Mustangs dropped in four 3-pointers and three free throws in the final three minutes, while Meme Nicolis made one more field goal and two free throws, Hayley Louzao sank two free throws, and Angel Bernardi swished a 3-pointer with 24 seconds left, to make the final score 52-85.

            The Bear Cubs stayed right with the Mustangs for the first 16 minutes of the game. But after that the Mustangs took advantage of the Bear Cubs' 20 more turnovers and slow transition to defense. The Bear Cubs made 16 out of 56 shots (29%), while the hosts were successful on 32 out of 70 (46%), including 10 out of 25 (40%) from beyond the arc.

            None of the Bear Cubs scored in double figures. Sadie Irvine, Tiffany Salinas, and Meme Nicolis each totaled 8 points. Angel Bernardi, Hayley Louzao, Ashley Hart, and Destiny Grayer scored 5 points each. La Donna Saint Louis added 4 points, Madison Barsuglia 2, and Jenny Eggers 2. Meme Nicolis reached double figures in rebounding again with 11, and Tiffany Salinas grabbed 7 missed shots. Madison Barsuglia and Destiny Grayer each passed for 3 assists.

 

Bear Cubs are at home against Sacramento City College Friday January 20th at 7:30pm
