With heavy rains, and wind gust at times up to 20 mph, a number of Bear Cubs Track and Field athletes put up some serious marks. Highlighting the meet was the performance of Sophomore Erica Ruiz in the 1500 and 5000m and Freshmen Stephanie Fernandez in the 400H.

After a strong season last year, Ruiz was looking to get her season off on a strong foot. Ruiz came out to win a wire-to-wire 1500, breaking the 5-minute mark (a feet she didn't do until the conference meet last year) with a time of 4:52.45. Coming back a few hours later, Ruiz doubled with the 5000m. Just missing the A standard, Ruiz finished first (in her trainers) with a time of 18:40.27.

Stephanie Fernandez took it to the 400m Hurdles, winning her first ever race at the longer hurdle race with a time of 1:06.05. Fernandez narrowly missed the State A Standard of 1:05.70. The Freshman out of Montgomery High School, Fernandez has her sights set on the

State Championships. She is currently ranked 3rd in the State.

Other impressive marks for the women included Ana Drake-Tripp in the Steeplechase (13:37.70), Julia Grimm in the Discus (33.18m) and Courtney Rhoda in the Hammer Throw (35.08m).

On the Men's Side Freshman Adam Gockel had another PR day, hitting a large improvement in the Pole Vault clearing 4.22m (13'10"). Equally impressive was the 1-2 punch of Nathan Bailey and Justin Thurman in the 3000m steeplechase. Finishing in a time of 10:37.20 Bailey took control early and ran away with the win. In his first steeplechase of his college career, Thurman ran an impressive race, finishing with a time of 10:45.50.

Other impressive marks for the men included Cyrus Corman-Gill in the Shot Put (12.70m) and the Hammer (42.47m) and Christian Diaz in the Discus (42.47m).

Next week, some of the Bear Cubs will travel to San Mateo to compete at the Bob Rush Team Challenge while others will head to Sacramento State to Compete in the Hornet Invite.
