CLOVIS – The Clovis Community College cruised to its third straight win to open the season, a 2-1 victory over visiting Santa Rosa Junior College on Friday in the Crush's home opener.
Clovis fell behind early after the Bear Cubs tallied the game's first goal in the ninth minute of play.
But sophomore Alyssa Ruelas came through with the equalizer, scoring unassisted in the 28th minute to even up the game at 1-1.
The game stayed tied into and beyond halftime. In the 59th minute, sophomore Jimena Gutierrez delivered what proved to be the game-winning goal as she scored off the assist from freshman Kaylynn Alves.
The Crush defense and goalkeeper Carly Tynan did their part to hold the lead to help improve Clovis to 3-0 this season.
Friday marked the start of three consecutive home matches. On Tuesday (Sep. 12), the Crush will be tested as they host rival Fresno City College in their Central Valley Conference opener at 4 p.m. That will be followed by Friday's (Sep. 15) 4 p.m. conference game against College of the Sequoias.
