Bear Cubs Walkoff West Valley 7-6

On Wednesday, the Bear Cubs (6-3) hosted a midweek matchup against the West Valley Vikings  (8-4). Santa Rosa traveled to West Valley earlier in the season, falling to the Vikings 6-5 in walk-off fashion.

Jordan Giacomini, making his second start and fifth appearance of the season, got the start on the mound for the Bear Cubs. Giacomini retired the first three batters in the opening frame. Santa Rosa got their offense going early by putting up two runs in the first inning via an RBI single by Josh Martin and a Sacrifice Fly by Zane Bennett. Giacomini threw a shutdown inning, but the Bear Cub offense also went scoreless in the bottom half. The Vikings got their first base runner of the day in the third inning but failed to score. The Bear Cubs added two more runs with a solo home run by Jake McCoy (his third home run in as many games) and an RBI single by Mason Cox. At the end of three innings, Santa Rosa led 4-0. The top of the fourth was Giacomini's third three-up, three-down frame. Tyler Nordyke led off the bottom half with a double, then Aidan Lombardi drove him home with a single up the middle. The bats for West Valley came alive in the fifth inning, as the Vikings put up five runs to tie the game. Giacomini was relieved by Luke Schat after 4.2 innings of work. The Bear Cubs failed to score in the bottom half of the inning, and the game headed into the sixth inning tied at 5-5. The Vikings had runners on second and third with one out in the sixth, but the Bear Cubs kept them off the scoreboard. In the bottom half, Alex Leopard hit a go-ahead solo home run, making the score 6-5 in favor of Santa Rosa. With the Bear Cubs clinging to a one-run lead, Schat struck out two batters in a shutdown frame. After a scoreless bottom of the seventh inning, Collin Medeiros relieved Schat in the top of the eighth. West Valley responded with an RBI single, tying the game at 6-6. Slugger, Jake McCoy relieved Medeiros on the mound with two outs in the eighth and struck out the batter, limiting the damage to one run. The Bear Cub offense again failed to score in the bottom half of the inning, but McCoy did not allow a run in the top of the ninth inning. Santa Rosa put two runners on with one out as pinch hitter, Dalen Tinsley stepped to the plate and crushed a walk-off double to left field, scoring Bennett and securing a 7-6 victory.
