Jason Verrett, the former Bear Cub football player, had some nerves pumping at the famed Radio City Music Hall in New York on draft night. The corner back from Texas Christian University was about to have his dream come true playing profession football. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell stepped up to the podium saying the words Verrett wanted to hear, "With the twenty fifth pick in the NFL draft the San Diego Chargers select Jason Verrett, corner back, Texas Christian University." Jason Verrett  has now become the first player in Santa Rosa Junior College history to ever be selected in the first round of the NFL draft. Some NFL teams had an issue with his 5'9" size, but that did not seem to bother the Chargers in selecting him. That included  Marin County native and San Diego head coach Mike McCoy, "Size doesn't matter to him. He's a tough, physical football player," said McCoy. The speedy three-year starter at TCU  was the co-Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year recipient and semifinalist for the Jim Thorpe Award, as the top defensive back in the nation. Verrett played for then defensive coordinator Lenny Wagner. The current Santa Rosa head coach was ecstatic for his player. "I am relieved, happy, and super proud of him," said Wagner. Verrett's mother even texted Coach Wagner, saying "Go Chargers! Thanks so much, what a blessing and Bolt Up." "Bolt Up" refers to a San Diego team mantra that they use. While at SRJC, he was an All Conference selection in 2010. His accomplishment of being selected in the first round is one of the great success stories in Bear Cub football history. He played one season for Santa Rosa and "we are proud of SRJC to help be a part of his success," Wagner added. "No school recruited him. TCU came to see him play and offered him a scholarship on the spot." Verrett accepted that offer and now the rest is history. At Santa Rosa he was ranked by rivals.com as the sixth-best junior college defensive back and listed 35th nationally for overall JC players. He recorded five interceptions while returning two kickoffs for touchdowns for the Bear Cubs. The Second-Team All American selection was a three-year starter at TCU, after transferring from SRJC. Verrett has a nose for breaking up passes. He recorded 41 passes defended with the Horned Frogs, including an incredible 22 in 2012. In addition, he notched 160 tackles and nine interceptions during his three seasons in Fort Worth. In 2013, Verrett posted 39 tackles, 14 passes defended, 3.5 tackles for loss, two interceptions, one sack, and one forced fumble. The only other Bear Cub football player selected high in the NFL draft was Koa Misi. The Miami Dolphins, in the second round, drafted the star linebacker from the University of Utah in 2010. The Montgomery High graduate is in his fifth year with Miami.
