Santa Rosa, CA — Santa Rosa Junior College (SRJC) announced today a significant leadership transition in its football program as Lenny Wagner, the longtime head coach of the Bear Cubs football team, steps down from his coaching role. After a 24-year coaching career at SRJC—including 12 years as the assistant head coach and 12 years as the head coach—Wagner will continue his impactful career as a full-time faculty member in the Kinesiology Department. In his new role, Wagner will focus on guiding students in their academic and athletic pursuits while remaining an advocate for the Bear Cubs program.

"This is the right time for me to shift my focus fully to teaching," said Wagner. "Serving as the head coach of the Bear Cubs has been one of the greatest honors of my career. I am proud of our team and deeply grateful for the support of the SRJC community over the years. While I may be stepping away from the sidelines, I will remain one of the Bear Cubs' biggest fans and a lifelong champion for our program."

Wagner's legacy at SRJC is defined by a steadfast commitment to student-athlete development both on and off the field. Under his leadership, the SRJC football program achieved significant success and became a source of pride for the college and its community. Beyond wins and championships, Wagner's focus on the holistic development of his players earned him the respect and admiration of colleagues, students, and alumni alike.

"We are proud to support Lenny in his decision to step down as head coach," said Matt Markovich, Athletic Director. "We are happy that he is not going far and will still be a part of the SRJC family. We thank him for his tremendous leadership over the past 24 years. Our football program has achieved significant success under his guidance, and we are excited to build on the foundation he has established."

The transition in leadership is marked by the appointment of Dante DePaola, the current SRJC Bear Cub Defensive Coordinator, as the new head coach effective immediately. DePaola, who has been a pivotal figure in the coaching staff, brings extensive experience and a clear vision for the future of Bear Cub football. His promotion reflects the strength and continuity of the program.

"Dante has been an integral part of our coaching staff, and we are confident that his leadership will continue to drive our program forward," added Markovich. "This transition reflects the strength and continuity of our football program."

Wagner's transition to full-time teaching allows him to expand his influence on the SRJC community by shaping the next generation of students and athletes through education. His contributions to the Bear Cubs football program will endure through the vibrant culture he has cultivated and the countless student-athletes he has mentored. The SRJC community looks forward to celebrating his achievements and supporting him in his new academic endeavors.
