Balanced Attack Gives Santa Rosa Second Straight Big 8 Victory

On Tuesday night, the Bear Cubs (11-6, 3-2) hosted the Wolverines (5-12, 2-3) of Sierra College in both teams' sixth Big 8 Conference game. Guard, Zeke Grund and Forward, Ezekiel Stallworth each drained a three-point shot to give Santa Rosa an early advantage. After a four-point play by Sierra College evened the score, the Wolverines installed a zone defense to slow the Bear Cub offense. Stallworth converted two three-point plays in three trips as Santa Rosa took a commanding 15-6 lead with 13 minutes before halftime. Two three-point field goals by Sierra College cut Santa Rosa's lead to three with 9 minutes left in the half. Back-to-back-to-back threes from Guards, Ben White and Grund (twice) extended the Bear Cub lead to 12 points (24-12) at the 7:53 mark. A three-and-a-half-minute scoring drought would ensue before being broken with a Sierra College free throw. Grund then added his fourth triple of the night to give Santa Rosa its biggest lead of the half, a 14-point advantage. A 6-0 Wolverine run cut Santa Rosa's lead to 8. Three free throws with under a minute left made the score 30-19 Bear Cubs, as the teams headed into the locker room. Grund led the Bear Cubs in scoring at the break with 12 points, with Stallworth not far behind with 11. The duo of Grund and Stallworth accounted for 23 of Santa Rosa's 30 first-half points.

Forward, Stephen Ransom made his presence known quickly in the second half by scoring inside the paint. Guard, Yatyn Anderson got on the scoreboard by knocking down a three-pointer. After a bit of a momentum shift in favor of Sierra College, Santa Rosa Guard, Chris Holley made consecutive field goals to extend the lead to 16. The teams then exchanged baskets over the next few possessions before Holley, who was scoreless in the first half, stayed hot by hitting a three-point shot. With just over 13 minutes remaining, Ransom brought fans at Haehl Pavillion to their feet with a ferocious putback dunk off of an offensive rebound. A seven-point surge from Holley increased the Bear Cub lead to 20 with 10:25 minutes to play. Santa Rosa's offense went on a five-minute scoring drought, but the team's suffocating defense surrendered only five points during that span. In the final minutes, Guard, Andrew Pengel added 3 three-point field goals, securing Santa Rosa's second straight conference victory and second straight 28-point victory with a final score of 70-42. The offensive splits for the Bear Cubs were 46% (23-50) from the field, 40% (12-30) behind the arc, and 67% (12-18) from the free throw line. The four players who scored in double figures were: Chris Holley with 14 (all in the second half), Ezekiel Stallworth with 13, Zeke Grund with 12 (all in the first half), and Yatyn Anderson with 11 (all in the second half).

Santa Rosa, who improved to (12-6, 4-2) will travel on Friday, Jan. 19th to face the Modesto JC Pirates (4-14, 1-5). The Bear Cubs will look to turn their positive play into a winning streak and move toward the top of the Big 8 Conference standings.
