Bear Cubs Sweep Doubleheader VS. West Hills

On Saturday, the Bear Cubs (2-2) hosted the West Hills College Falcons (0-7) in a doubleheader. Hailey Martin was on the bump in the opening game for Santa Rosa. Martin allowed just one hit in a scoreless opening frame. The bats were hot early for the Bear Cubs as Adriana Novak crushed a two-RBI double, followed by back-to-back RBI triples by Esperanza Marquez and Martin, giving Santa Rosa a 4-0 lead after the first inning. Martin recorded a shutdown inning in the second. In the bottom half, the Bear Cubs added two more runs on a double by Haley Wyatt. In the third, Martin continued her dominance on the mound by retiring the side in order. After a scoreless frame from the Bear Cub offense, Martin threw her fourth scoreless frame in as many innings, keeping the score 6-0. The Bear Cubs pushed across three runs, highlighted by a Gabriela Schenone RBI single. Martin completed her shutout performance by striking out two batters in the fifth inning. The game was called after five innings due to the run rule. Due to a dominating pitch performance by Hailey Martin and timely hitting by the Bear Cub offense, Santa Rosa won game one of the doubleheader 9-0.

In game two, it was Jordan Baughn on the mound for the Bear Cubs as she looked to follow up Martin's dominant outing with one of her own. Baughn made quick work of the Falcons in the first, retiring the first three batters in order. Olivia Gabriel hit a leadoff triple for the Bear Cubs, and the next batter, Mallory O'Keefe drove her in with an RBI groundout, giving Santa Rosa a 1-0 lead. In the second, the Falcons threatened with two base runners, but the Bear Cub defense kept it a 1-0 game. Santa Rosa's offense was held scoreless in the second and third innings, but Baughn continued to keep West Hills off the scoreboard. In the bottom of the fourth, Bear Cubs scored three runs, highlighted by a solo home run by Haley Wyatt and an RBI double by Gabriela Schenone, extending the lead to 4-0. After another shutdown frame by Baughn, Adriana Novak hit an RBI single, and Gabriela Schenone drove in a run on a sacrifice fly, making the score 6-0 after 5 innings. The top of the sixth was another shoutout inning for Baughn, the eleventh straight shutout inning of the day for Bear Cub pitching. In the bottom half of the sixth, the Bear Cubs scored on a two-run error, ending the game on an 8-0 run-rule walk-off victory. The Bear Cubs (4-2) look to build off the newly found positive momentum into Tuesday's doubleheader vs. Yuba College.
