Bear Cubs Drop Big 8 Opening Doubleheader

Bear Cubs Drop Big 8 Opening Doubleheader

On Saturday, the Bear Cubs (7-3) opened Big 8 Conference play with a home doubleheader vs. the San Joaquin Delta Mustangs (5-1). In game one, Jordan Baughn got the start on the mound for the Bear Cubs. Delta scored one run in the first inning off of a single up the middle. In the bottom half, the Bear Cubs put two runners on with one out but left them stranded. The Mustangs pushed three across in the second inning, putting the Bear Cubs at a 4-0 deficit. After the second inning, Baughn settled into a rhythm, and would not allow another run. Santa Rosa got on the scoreboard with two runs in the fourth via an RBI double by Mallory O'Keefe and an RBI single by Adriana Novak, cutting the deficit to two runs, 4-2. In the final innings, the Bear Cubs had runners on base, but could not score any more runs. Delta took game one 4-2.

In the second game of the doubleheader, Hailey Martin was the starting pitcher for the Bear Cubs. In game two, Santa Rosa struck first with an RBI double by Esperanza Marquez in the second inning. Martin did a good job of limiting Mustang base runners through the first three innings. In the fourth, Delta put up five runs, taking a 5-1 lead. The Mustangs added one run in both the fifth and sixth innings, making the score 7-1. The Bear Cub offense had no answer for Delta's pitching and fell 7-1.

The Bear Cubs (7-5) will look to rebound with a home Big 8 game vs. American River on Tuesday.
