Women's Basketball: Bear Cubs come up short in the championship game

For the first time in four tournaments the Bear Cubs (6-5) played for the Championship. Their foe in the finals of the City College of San Francisco Tournament was the East Los Angeles College Huskies (11-1). The Huskies jumped out to a 5-0 lead before Alicia Mehtlan finally scored for the Bear Cubs at the 17:39 mark. A 3-pointer each by Alicia Mehtlan and Jenna Dunbar closed the gap to 11-13 halfway through the first period. When Jenna Dunbar scored the Bear Cubs' final field goal of the half with 5:06 on the clock, they were behind 15-16. The Huskies sank their final basket--a 3-pointer--16 seconds later and their two free throws to the Bear Cubs' one gave them a 21-16 halftime advantage.

The Huskies scored first in the second half with a couple of free throws. Taylor Graham's basket at the 16:53 mark put the Bear Cubs down by just two, 22-24. But the Bear Cubs missed their next seven shots, while the Huskies sank three field goals, three 3-pointers, and eight free throws to extend their lead to 47-26 before Amber Hart finally made a basket at the 5:40 mark. The Bear Cubs could only add a field goal by Sarah Arteseros and two free throws by Alicia Mehtlan to end the game with 32 points to the Huskies' 56.

The Bear Cubs only made 26% (11 out of 43) of their shots, including 2 out of 18 from beyond the arc. The Huskies only made 25% (14 out of 57) of their shots, but 8 of the made shots were 3-pointers. The Bear Cubs made just 8 out of 18 (44%) free throws, while the Huskies shot 30 free throws, making 20 of them. Except for the numerous fouls, the Bear Cubs played good defense, holding the Huskies to 56 points and only 14 baskets compared to their average of 22.

Alicia Mehtlan, who was selected All Tourney, led with 12 points and 7 rebounds. Jenna Dunbar, also selected All Tourney, was held to 6 points and 6 rebounds. Brooke Santander and Sarah Arteseros each scored 4 points, and Taylor Graham, Amber Hart, and Vai Thompson 2 points each.
