Women's Basketball pulls away from American River on the road

The Bear Cubs (8-10, 2-2) won their first Big 8 Conference road game by surviving a tight battle, despite poor shooting, to defeat the American River College Beavers ((7-9, 2-2), 52-48. The Beavers tallied the first three points on a 22-footer 79 seconds into the game. The Bear Cubs missed their first seven shots before Alicia Mehtlan finally sank one with 15:56 on the clock, making the score 2-3. The Beavers answered with a field goal and Brittney Rachuy returned the favor. But two 3-pointers by the Beavers helped stretch their lead to 12-4 at the 11:16 mark. Brooke Santander scored her only field goal 10 seconds later. After three more scoreless trips down the court, Annie Studdert completed a 3-point play and put in two more field goals to cut their deficit to 13-15 with 6:30 left in the half. The Bear Cubs missed their next six shots, then Alicia Mehtlan finally broke the drought again with 3:12 remaining to tie the score at 15. The Beavers swished a 3-pointer nearly a minute later. Brittney Rachuy's pull-up jumper in the middle of the key with 34 seconds left drew the Bear Cubs to within one, 17-18, going into halftime.

            The Beavers converted two free throws on their first possession of the second half. Then Annie Studdert sank the Bear Cubs' first shot attempt. After two misses, Alicia Mehtlan hit three in a row, the third a 3-pointer to put the Bear Cubs in front 26-22 less than 5 minutes into the half. A Beaver 3-pointer and two free throws moved them to within two, 27-29 at the 10:56 mark. Jenna Dunbar recorded her first points of the contest with 10:25 on the clock when she banked in a putback, was fouled on the play, and hit the free throw for a 32-27 margin. The Bear Cubs made just two of their next 10 shots while the Beavers fought their way back and retook the lead 38-36 on a 3-pointer with 5:23 remaining. Seven seconds later Jenna Dunbar was fouled and went to the line to shoot 1+1. She made both free throws, tying the score. Sixteen seconds later the Beavers passes out of a trap and found their post player wide open near the basket to take the lead once again. Amber Hart made one of two free throws and an American River player also made one of two, keeping them in front 41-39 with 4:24 on the clock. The Jenna Dunbar swished two 3-pointers in a row to put the Bear Cubs ahead 45-41 with 2:27 to play. Annie Studdert added one free throw 19 seconds later. The Beavers missed a shot, Jenna Dunbar was fouled and went to the line to shoot two. She made both for a 48-41 advantage with 38 seconds. The Beavers quickly worked for a shot and swished a 3-pointer 12 seconds later. The Bear Cubs called a timeout and set up an inbounds play against the press. Jenna Dunbar caught the inbounds pass and was immediately fouled. She made both free throws, making the score 50-44. The Beavers drew a foul with 19 seconds left and made the first free of two throws. Following the missed second shot, they ended up with the loose ball and put in a 3-pointer with 11 seconds to play. The Bear Cubs inbounded and Taylor Graham was fouled. Scoreless up to this point, she sank both pressure free throws for a 52-48 margin with 10 seconds to go. The Beavers got off a shot that missed the target and Annie Studdert corralled the rebound as the buzzer sounded.

            The Bear Cubs again didn't shoot well, making 8 out of 25 shots (25%) in the first half and 10 out of 30 (33%) in the second. After making only 7 out of 13 free throws in the first 38 minutes of the game, the Bear Cubs made all 6 in the final two minutes to secure the win.

            Jenna Dunbar scored all of her team-high 15 points in the second half and also deflected two passes while on the press that the Bear Cubs turned into points. Annie Studdert, with her season-high 12 points, provided some much-needed scoring punch. Alicia Mehtlan contributed 11 points and 6 rebounds. Brittney Rachuy added 4 points, Brooke Santander 3, Taylor Graham, Vai Thompson, and Niambi Saint Louis 2 each, and Amber Hart 1. Taylor Graham and Vai Thompson were the top rebounders with 7 each. Taylor Graham made 6 of the team's 7 assists.
