Women's Basketball: Big response by Bear Cubs

             In the consolation bracket elimination game of the CCSF Golden Gate Tournament, the Bear Cubs (3-6) took on the Wolverines of San Bernardino Valley College (0-10). Ashley Hart and Zaina Depina scored the first two field goals of the game prior to the Wolverines hitting a 3-pointer from the baseline. The Bear Cubs scored 10 more points, including a 3-pointer by Madison Barsuglia before the Wolverines converted a 3-pointer play with 1:47 on the clock and making one free throw 30 seconds later. The Bear Cubs ended the quarter with one field goal each by Meme Nicolis and La Donna Saint Louis plus two free throws by Sadie Irvine with one second on the clock for a 20-7 lead.

            The Bear Cubs missed their first three shots of the second quarter then made three in a row followed by two more out of their next four to increase their lead to 33-9 with 4:16 on the clock. The Wolverines scored six unanswered points during the next two minutes to make the score 15-33. The Bear Cubs finished the quarter by making their final three shots, the last two being 3-pointers by Madison Barsuglia and Zaina Depina. The Wolverines added a field goal and a 3-pointer. The score going into halftime was 41-20.

            The Wolverines made one of two free throws in the first minute of the third quarter. Ashley Hart hit a field goal with 9:02 on the clock then one of two free throws on the following possession. Sadie Irvine dropped in a 3-pointer at the 8:04 mark, and Destiny Grayer hit one nearly two minutes later for a 50-23 lead. During the remaining 6:12 of the period, Jenny Eggers made one free throw, and Hayley Louzao, Angel Bernardi, and Tiffany Salinas each sank one field goal to increase the lead to 57-29 by the end of the quarter.

            The Wolverines began the fourth quarter with a field goal. Then Sadie Irvine made two field goals in a row followed by La Donna Saint Louis' two in a row and two free throws to make the score 67-23 with 6:17 to play. After a Wolverine field goal, Ashley Hart and Tiffany Salinas each made one field goal, and Angel Bernardi swished a 3-pointer at the 4:05 mark. As the ball was in the air, Jaida Howard was called for a foul against Tiffany Salinas. Howard argued with the official and was assessed with a technical foul, which counted as her fifth foul, so she had to leave the game. Hayley Louzao made both of those free throws for a 76-33 margin. The Wolverines finished the game with a free throw and a 3-pointer. For the Bear Cubs Tiffany Salinas put in two field goals, and Angel Bernardi and Jenny Eggers each sank one free throw to make the final score 82-37.

            Everyone scored for the Bear Cubs with La Donna Saint Louis leading the way with 14. Sadie Irvine added 11, Tiffany Salinas and Ashley Hart 10 each, Angel Bernardi 8, Jenny Eggers 7, Madison Barsuglia 6, Destiny Grayer and Zaina Depina 5 each, Hayley Louzao 4, and Meme Nicolis 2. Jenny Eggers and Sadie Irvine both grabbed 9 rebounds each. Destiny Grayer led in assists with 4. Sadie Irvine made 4 steals and passed for 3 assists.

            The Bear Cubs' next opponent for the Consolation Championship is Laney College, which defeated Skyline College 72-45.
