Gonzalez's 36pts leads the Bear Cubs to win over ELAC

            For their third and final game of the CCSF Golden Gate Classic, the Bear Cubs (8-3) took on the Huskies (4-8) of East Los Angeles College. The Huskies jumped out to a 6-0 lead, as the Bear Cubs committed three turnovers and missed four shots. Ivy Gonzalez scored four points in a row on an 18-foot baseline inbounds play and Lindsey Arellano's assist and a putback at the 5:30 mark. During the next five minutes, the Huskies' post player Asiah Harris made three more shots near the hoop over defenders, while Gonzalez sank a 6-footer and two free throws, putting the East LA lead at 12-8. With 25 seconds left, Hailey Webb passed inbounds from the Bear Cubs' baseline to Gonzalez, who drained the shot from beyond the arc. Shasta Vlasak scored the last two points of the quarter after intercepting a pass and banking in the left side layup, to nudge the Bear Cubs ahead 13-12.

            After 64 seconds of second quarter play, Sydney Martin banked in a 2-footer off of Kaia Eubanks' assist. Sixty-five seconds later Moriah Mosely drained a 3-pointer. Betzie Hernandez answered with a 3-pointer and a drive down through the right side of the key with 5:51 on the clock to extend the lead to 20-15. Asiah Harris scored from the low post on the Huskies' next possession, and then Cece Solano caught Lindsey Arellano's lob pass over a defender next to the basket and banked in the 1-footer. The Huskies added two more field goals to close to 19-22. After Arellano sank two free throws, Harris hit her sixth field goal of the half at the 3:29 mark. The Bear Cubs strung together a 7-0 run comprised of Eubanks' drive, her 1-footer off of Ivy Gonzalez's assist, and Gonzalez's 3-point play on a drive to widen their lead to 31-21 with 54 seconds left. Mosely swished a 3-pointer from straight ahead to cut their deficit to 24-31 by halftime.

            Sydney Martin's 15-footer, her two free throws, and Ivy Gonzalez's 4-foot scoop shot stretched their lead to 37-26 after two minutes in the fourth quarter. During the next five minutes, Derricka Millinghaus sank four field goals and Asiah Harris one, while the Bear Cubs tallied 16 points on Hailey Webb's back door cut with Sydney Martin's assist, Kaia Eubanks' 3-point play on a fast break layup, her 1-footer with Lindsey Arellano's assist, Ivy Gonzalez's 3-pointer, two free throws by Arellano, Cece Solano's fast break layup, and Shasta Vlasak's putback, as the Bear Cubs' advantage ballooned to 53-36 with 3:10 on the clock. The Bear Cubs ended the quarter on a 12-3 run, with Gonzalez scoring all 12 points on a 3-point play, a 3-pointer, a back door cut with Eubanks' assist, two technical foul free throws, and two shooting foul free throws, giving them a 65-39 advantage by the end of the quarter.

            Ivy Gonzalez started the fourth quarter where she left off at the end of the previous period by scoring the Bear Cubs' first five points on a 3-pointer and a fast break layup. Olivia Paramo sank two free throws, Lindsey Arellano a 5-footer, Paramo a field goal, Cele Urzua a 3-pointer, and Paramo another basket at the 7:00 mark, making the score 75-45 in favor of the Bear Cubs. Urzua's 3-pointer with 5:38 on the clock was soon followed by Moriah Moseley's 3-pointer and 67 seconds later one free throw. The Bear Cubs added five more points on Cece Solano's 2-footer and Betzie Hernandez's 3-pointer. Amaya Scott completed the scoring with a 3-pointer just before the final buzzer sounded on the Bear Cubs' 83-51 win.

            The Bear Cubs were able to break open a close game by outscoring their opponents 34-15 in the third quarter on 11 out of 16 shots (69%). For the game the Bear Cubs made 30 out of 64 shots (47%) and all 15 of their free throws for a season-high 83 points. The post defenders held 6-foot center Asiah Harris, who scored 12 points in the first half, to 14 for the game. Three Huskies scored in double figures: Harris with 14 points, Moriah Mosely 12, and Derricka Millinghaus 10.

            Ivy Gonzalez led the Bear Cubs with her sixth double-double, which included a career-high 36 points along with 15 rebounds. Kaia Eubanks added 9 points, Betzie Hernandez 8, Cele Urzua, Lindsey Arellano, Sydney Martin, and Cece Solano 6 each, Shasta Vlasak 4, and Hailey Webb 2. Lindsey Arellano passed for a career-high 7 assists.
