Matthew Walter joins the Bear Cub Coaching Staff having experience working at a lot of different levels within the world of college basketball over the last eight years. Coach Matt comes to Santa Rosa after serving one season as a volunteer assistant coach at Division II Dominican University of California under Tim LaKose.
Last year at Dominican, Coach Matt helped the Penguins to just their second ever 20-win season and their first conference tournament win since 2018. He also helped Jenna Duley, a transfer from Big 8 rival Sierra, to a second team all Pac-West selection in her senior year.
Prior to that, Coach Matt spent part of the 2021-22 season as Director of Basketball Operations at Division I Kennesaw State University. While a member of the Owls staff, he was responsible for all the teams travel arrangements, gear and meals.
Coach Matt got his start in the coaching world as the Basketball Scouting and Assistant Operations Coordinator at the University of San Francisco under former Bear Cub head coach Molly Goodenbour. From 2018 to 2020, he helped the Dons improve their win total each year, culminating in a 2020 appearance and victory in the WNIT for San Francisco. He helped coach Ioanna Krimili, who set a single season record at USF for most threes made in a season with 97.
Coach Matt started in women’s basketball as a student manager at the University of Miami in Florida. During his time in Coral Gables, the Hurricanes went to three straight NCAA tournaments.
Coach Matt received a B.S. in Communications from the University of Miami in 2018. He also earned a master’s degree in Sport Management in 2021 from USF while he was coaching there.
