Bear Cubs Bring the Offense in Season Opener - Beat Lassen 8-0

The Bear Cubs faced Lassen Community College (0-2-0) of the Golden Valley Conference in their season and home opener on Thursday, August 28th at 1pm. The Bear Cubs quickly took the lead when sophomore midfielder, Holle Depina, dribbled passed a defender and slotted a ball from 18 yards out past Lassen goalkeeper Barbara Lazarini in the 4th minute. 5 minutes later, freshman Julia Lambert received a through ball from Depina, beating the keeper with her first touch and ultimately finding the net from 5 yards out. In the 18th minute, freshman midfielder, Kathryn Kane, scored on a one-touch finish after Lambert received a through ball from sophomore forward Kayleen Belda. In the 28th minute, Santa Rosa scored on their first set piece of the season. Sophomore forward, Taylor Halstenson, placed a corner kick on the back of the 6-yard box, finding freshman midfielder, Mar Alinas, on a header goal. In the 44th minute, Depina struck again with an unassisted finish after stripping a Lassen central defender of the ball and taking the goalkeeper on 1v1, leaving the Bear Cubs with a 5-0 advantage at the half.

The second half was also dominated by the Bear Cub offense. Receiving a pass from Depina at the top of the 6-yard box, Belda quickly turned and placed the ball under a charging Lassen goalkeeper. Halstenson continued to take advantage of mistakes in Lassen's backline in the 61st minute by intercepting an errant pass and capitalizing with a quick finish from 12 yards out. The Bear Cubs ended their triumph over the Cougars in the 83rd minute when freshman midfielder, Darcy Forsythe, beat a Lassen defender and found freshman forward, Mali Herrera, at the corner of the 6 yard box who found the back post on a one-touch finish.

Starting freshman goalkeeper , Morgan Jernigan, was credited with the shutout and win in her first start with the Bear Cubs. Freshman , Jayci Mariani, played the second half and recorded 3 saves.
