Women's Water Polo off to a 4-1 start

The Santa Rosa Junior College Women's Water Polo team started their season off strong, amassing a 4-1 record during their first week of action. 

The Bear Cubs kicked off their season with a 20-0 shutout of Modesto Junior College. Goalie Shannon Whetzel anchored a strong defensive effort, while Annika Erickson and Makayla Jordan paced the offense with eight and five goals. Maggie Selzer and Caroline Frost both recorded hat-tricks and Jacquelyn Castro rounded out the scoring, chipping in one goal.
 
SRJC then traveled to Saratoga for the West Valley tournament, returning home with three wins an one overtime loss. In their first tournament game, the Bear Cubs picked up a win over Cuesta College, jumping out to a 9-3 3rd quarter lead en route to a 14-9 victory. Jordan led the Bear Cubs with six goals, Erickson contributed four, Selzer three, and Bianca Boyajian scored one. In their second game of the day, the Bear cubs dropped a tough overtime loss to Tournament host, West Valley College by the score of 9-10. Castro started the game off with a goal, with Erickson scoring the next four goals, finishing with seven in the game. Selzer contributed one as the bear cubs dropped their first game of the season. Goalie Whetzel recorded 9 saves in the loss.
 
The Bear Cubs bounced back nicely with two decisive wins on Saturday, beating College of San Mateo 22-2 and Cabrillo College 19-5. Seven different bear cubs scored in the San Mateo game, as Erickson recorded 11, followed by Selzer with three. Jordan, Frost and Boyajian contributed two apiece and Mary Khattar and Gabi Edman scored their first goals of the season.
 
SRJC finished off the tournament strong against Cabrillo College. Goalie Whetzel had 9 saves and Erickson, Jordan and Selzer led the offense with 11, five, and three goals respectively.
 
The Bear Cubs are back in action on Friday 9/22 as they travel to Foothill College for a 7:00 p.m. showdown. Next, they travel down to Cabrillo College for a one day tournament on 9/23.
