Bear Cubs taken down on the road by Folsom

Tuesday the Bear Cubs (10-4, 1-1) traveled to Folsom to face the Falcons (13-2, 3-0) of Folsom Lake College. Sydney Martin made the first basket of the contest when she caught Kaia Eubanks' assist in the middle of the key and dropped in the shot. Thirteen seconds later Khalilah Corley swished a 3-pointer. Ivy Gonzalez hit a 15-footer, and then Athena Brombacher scored near the hoop. Eubanks banked in two 1-footers in a row, the first on a baseline inbounds pass from Lindsey Arellano and the second on a fast break layup off of Gonzalez's assist at the 8:09 mark for an 8-5 lead. Nearly two minutes later, Ursula Chen drained a 3-pointer followed by Brombacher's two baskets in a row. Kaia Eubanks' 1-footer off of Gonzalez's assist and her 6-footer tied the score at 12-12 with 4:10 on the clock. During the next four minutes, the Bear Cubs put in eight points on Martin's 3-footer off of Abby Tacla's assist, one free throw by Tacla, Gonzalez's 2-foot pullup jumper and her 3-pointer with 16 seconds left. Meanwhile Corley swished another 3-pointer, Brombacher made another low post basket, and Jadyn Weaver banked in a fast break layup with 39 seconds remaining. Then one second before the buzzer, Weaver's 3-pointer put the Falcons ahead 22-20.

The Falcons sank two consecutive field goals in the first minute of the second quarter. After Ivy Gonzalez hit a 6-footer, Leilani Edinburgh made a 3-pointer. Lindsey Arellano's scoring drive with 7:43 on the clock prompted a Falcon timeout with them ahead 29-24. Fifteen seconds later Edinburgh made a 3-pointer. Gonzalez scored on a back door cut after catching Kaia Eubanks' assist pass at the 6:17 mark. Lexi Peters made a 3-pointer and Jasmine Clee a field goal before Eubanks banked in a 1-footer on a baseline inbounds pass from Lindsey Arellano. In the final 4:30 of the quarter, the Falcons sank four 3-pointers, a field goal by Brombacher, and one free throw by Clee to get to 52 points. The Bear Cubs tallied just eight more points on Sydney Martin's putback, Hailey Webb's fast break layup as the trailer with Eubanks' assist, Cece Solano's 16-footer, and Gonzalez's putback to make their halftime deficit 36-52.

Neither team scored in the third quarter until Ivy Gonzalez sank an 18-footer at the 7:18 mark. Athena Brombacher made a shot from inside the key 15 seconds later. Shasta Vlasak banked in a 2-footer after cutting to the hoop and catching Sydney Martin's across-the-width-of-the-key pass. Lexi Peters swished her third 3-pointer, and then Ivy Gonzalez drew a shooting foul, making both free throws. Vlasak banked in a fast break layup off of Martin's assist with 5:05 on the clock. Livi Fernandez made a field goal, and then Ivy Gonzalez dropped in a 5-footer pullup jumper. The Falcons added one more field goal each by Brombacher and Peters. The Bear Cubs tallied the last three points of the period on Gonzalez's 10-footer fade-away shot and one free throw by Martin, leaving them behind by a score of 49-63.

The fourth quarter was a total domination by the Falcons as they outscored the Bear Cubs 23-1. The Bear Cubs missed all 16 of their shot attempts, and Lindsey Arellano sank one out of two free throws, making the final score 86-50 in favor of the Falcons.

The Falcons made 35 out of 73 shots (48%), including 15 out of 34 (44%) from beyond the arc. The Bear Cubs were successful on 17 out of 33 shots (52%) in the first half, but put in only 5 out of 29 (17%) in the second half. For the game the Bear Cubs only made one out of 10 3-point attempts. The Falcons pulled down 14 offensive rebounds, scoring on four of those second chances. The Bear Cubs grabbed nine offensive rebounds and put back two of them. All

Ivy Gonzalez led the Bear Cubs with 21 points, and Kaia Eubanks scored 10. Sydney Martin added 7 points, Shasta Vlasak 4, Lindsey Arellano 3, Hailey Webb and Cece Solano 2 each, and Abby Tacla 1. With the Falcons not missing many shots, no Bear Cub totaled more than four rebounds. Kaia Eubanks led in assists with 3.
